Who Cares About Socks? Your Feet! by Shannon A.

historyArabsockBeoseonDoes anybody really bother to learn about socks? Even though most people don’t know it socks have been around since the Stone Ages. Today they are a thing taken for granted and often they are worn only because a person has to. Many socks are now made just to look good. During the early times of socks they were needed for survival or else your feet might freeze. They kept your feet warm throughout long winters. The first socks were made out of animal skins and gathered and tied at your ankle. People have also found evidence of knitted socks in ancient Egypt. In the eighth century B.C., Greek poet Hesoid wrote of paloi socks made from matted animal fur. Mostly actors wore these. During the middle ages wealthy people wore colored cloth held in place by their garters. In the 1490’s hosiery was in one piece the legs were often two different colors. There are also Beoseon which are traditional Korean socks made of silk that were originally worn by the aristocrats and they were white no matter what you wore.
In the 1980’s legwarmers became popular and they were worn with any type of shoe even flip flops. Today there are many different types of socks ankle socks, toe socks, knee socks, even thigh socks. It has also recently become popular to wear mismatched socks. Many companies even sell socks that don’t match so that you can wear them just like that.

This season has been amazing for the Chase Middle School Green Tennis team! 3 wins, 4 losses and one tie wound up the season. Everyone tried extremely hard and set and achieved goals. Our coach, Mr. Beaulieu was committed, an excellent tennis player but most of all was so much fun! He definitely put the players to the test on the tennis courts with the deflated, orange tennis balls! Everyone on the tennis team hopes everyone comes back to play next spring and that some of the upcoming sixth graders will join the team. Green Tennis will miss our eighth grade players though- Aiden G., Conor B., Matt P., Dan K. and Alexa E. We all hope you have a great time in high school! Thank you everyone on the Green Tennis Team for a great season filled with wins, losses, fun, and hard work.

Ray Allen lights up 2nd game with 8 3 Pointers by Adam H. and Bubba L.

Celtic-LakerIt is the biggest rivalry in the NBA, brought to us again, the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers.
To advance to the finals, the Boston Celtics knocked out the Magic. Kobe and the Lakers defeated the Suns to get to the championship. The best of the West, The Lakers, and the best of the East, The Celtics, will battle to decide who the best team in the world is.
In game 1, the Lakers had a hold on the Celtics, and came out on top. Not too exciting, not too surprising, but in the second game, the Boston Celtics came away with the win. This is the first time the Lakers lost a postseason game at home. Ray Allen was the three point champion. He broke the record for most threes in a game, eight. Rajon Rondo was the MVP and had a double triple, which is scoring in the double digits for total rebounds, points, and assists. He had 19 points 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. He is only six feet, one inch tall. Garnett, easily 7 feet, had only four rebounds.
The best of four series is currently tied at 1-1.

A Musical Soiree At The Giguere by Margaret M.

Last Thursday, May 27, the Lower, Middle, and Upper school chorus groups had a combined choral concert. We sang a number of joint songs, including all the choruses, and then the individual groups sang many classical, historical, and cultural pieces. The Lower school sang a variety of cultural songs, including Irish folk tunes, the Middle school sang classics from Disney movies, like “Go the Distance” from “Hercules”, and “When You Believe” from “The Prince of Egypt”. The Upper school sang some historical songs, dating back to the 17th century. One of the songs was “Gloria”, from the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi. The upper school bell choir also played songs in between each of our performances. The whole concert ended with all of us singing “We are the World”, written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. This beautiful concert would not have been possible without Mrs. Drake and Mr. Ferrari, who put together this wonderful performance. This concert was a great way to enjoy the last few days of school before leaving for the summer.

Batter Up, Ladies! by Emily B.

The game of softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. George Hancock, considered the inventor of softball, shouted, “Let’s play ball!” He tied a boxing glove so that it resembled a ball, chalked out a diamond on the floor and broke off a broom handle to serve as a bat. What proceeded was an odd, smaller version of baseball. That game is now, 111 years later, known as the first softball game.
This year Chase Collegiate middle school had a fairly young softball team. Despite this, the team has come very far. They tried their best this season and played their hearts out. With ups and downs, win and losses, the most important thing is that this season everyone had a lot of fun. There weresome tough games this year but also some amazing triumphs. 3 wins and 6 losses was the record. This was an amazing, and fun filled season! There were wicked cool practices and the loveable captain, Emma B. She always brought her spirit and her weird but interesting dances to practice! Cach Ms. Laverty always put excitement into the games and practices. She taught the team how to work as a team and how to have fun. So, Thank-you from all of your softball team! There may have been fewer players this year mates but it was worth all the hard work to actually play the sport of softball. It was tough but fun and we hope to see everyone on the field again next year.

Type on Your Toast! by Jason K.

340x_scan-toasterWell, sort of. Have you ever wanted your morning to be a little more exciting? Well, this invention is probably the craziest way to do it! With the Scan Toaster you can take text and images and send them to the toaster, and then they are burned right into your toast! In my opinion, the coolest thing you can do is print the day’s weather on your toast. No more looking at the news! The way it works is by the hot wires in the toaster that flex and bend to make pictures and words. The wires have minute heat conductors that produce a mosaic of dots that create the toasted image. Only one problem, now every morning you no longer have to decide what to eat, but what to put on your toast!
