Run up the Stairs of the Empire State Building? No Problem by Ally F.

runup_2009Each year, over a hundred runners from around the world participate in this unique race up a total of 1,576 steps to the Observatory deck on the 86th floor of The Empire State Building. The 33rd annual Empire State Building Run Up took place on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd. The race climbs 1,050 feet, or approximately 1/5 of a mile. Since the tradition of the race began in 1978, there have been over 3,000 finishers. More than 300 people participated in the 2009 race representing 25 different states and 17 different countries. This building is the tallest building in New York City. Cindy Moll-Harris is the only woman to have won the race four times, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003. This year Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Fixx, Jonny Feldman, and Bill Boak all ran up. They donated the proceeds from their run to the Step-up for Haiti project. Can’t wait for next year!
